Therapeutic Support Worker

Strength In Care is registered with the NDIS to provide support and assistance to people with disabilities. We are specialised in delivering support services to children and teenagers who live at home or in temporary or permanent respite care within the scope of the Disability Act 2006 and other relevant legislation and guidelines.

The therapeutic support worker ensures that the individual needs of our clients are met in the areas of personal care, social, emotional, maximising the living, social and recreational skills of clients with a disability.

You will be working closely with children with a disability who can display severe behaviours of concern. You are a calm and confident support worker who can manage their emotions in a demanding and complex environment.

Roles Key Accountabilities

Service Delivery

• Provide support to people with disabilities using a person centred, therapeutic and active support approach.

  • Provide support services as required, based on an understanding of the client’s needs, wishes and level of independence within established parameters.

  • Assist clients attending external appointments, recreational activities and accessing and utilising community resources (e.g. general medical care, shops, banks, etc.).

  • Create and maintain an environment that empowers people with disabilities.

  • Identify and utilise specific communication methods to interact with people with disabilities.

  • Advocate for people with disabilities.

  • Complete administrative work including maintaining records and household accounts.

  • Plan meals and menus in accordance with food safety guidelines to meet nutritional, cultural

    and religious needs.

  • Assist residents in daily living and assist in the provision of food preparation, eating, dressing,

    maintenance of personal hygiene, arranging external appointments and general household

    chores.

  • Maintain interpersonal communications with residents and their families and provide advisory,

    social and emotional support.

  • Promote the maximum physical and social integration through supporting residents to

participate in the community.

  • Enhance the independence of people with disabilities.

  • Actively promote an environment, which enhances resident competencies within a secure and

    supportive environment.

  • Provide prescribed medication and care to residents, in accordance with program guidelines.

  • To meet, and strive to exceed, personal and workgroup targets in areas such as Safety,

    Efficiency and Effectiveness, amongst others.

  • Other Duties as directed.

    Reporting, System, Process and Analytics

    • Undertake administrative work to ensure it is completed in an accurate and timely manner that include but not limited to:

    • Ensure completion of appropriate documentation e.g. client case notes and outcomes. • Shift notes.
    • Behaviour support plans and behaviour management strategies.
    • Medication sheets.

    • Incident and hazard reporting.

    • Support plan reviews and progress.

  • Maintain client data and records that are relevant to the functions performed.

  • Have access to a smart mobile device to enter shift notes and incident reports.

  • Support the development & implementation of client goals including engaging with specialist

    services and other professionals as required.

  • Take opportunities to increase skills through identifying relevant training and study

    opportunities that will contribute to improved service outcomes.

  • Take part in audits relevant to service delivery to ensure compliance with policies and

    procedures, identify opportunities for improvement and to meet accreditation and legislative

    standards.

  • Demonstrate commitment to change management processes.

  • Identify and develop project opportunities to address service gaps, implement project work

    and report on findings and recommendations.

    Financials, Budgets, Target, Funding

    • Ensure that all financial transactions are undertaken in line with approved Strength In Care policy and delegations.

    • Contribute to effective management of Strength In Care resources.

    Culture, Engagement, Diversity – People Experience

    • Demonstrate behaviours aligned with Strength In Care Values and Code of Conduct.

  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of NDIS Code of Conduct guidelines from the

    NDIS Quality and Safeguarding Commission.

  • Participate in regular supervision, annual work plans and annual performance reviews.

  • Actively participate in all required training, inductions and development.

  • Attend and actively participate in required meetings.

  • Actively supports and demonstrates inclusive behaviour with a zero tolerance for any bullying,

harassment and inappropriate conduct.


Health and Safety

• Take reasonable care to ensure no risk of harm to self and others in the workplace. This includes immediately reporting any incidents, near miss, hazards and injuries.

  • Comply with relevant Occupational Health and Safety laws, standards, safe work practices, policies and procedures and attend all safety initiatives, improvements & training.

  • Demonstrate safe work behaviours and conducting work in accordance with our safety management system.

    Risk Management and Compliance – Quality and Accreditation

    • Ensure documentation meets both National Quality Standards and DPV Health quality requirements.

  • Ensure mandatory medication and attendance records are completed.

  • Actively identify, monitor and manage areas of key risk and lead appropriate escalation and

    response.

  • Actively monitor and improve the quality and safety of their care and services.

  • Identify risks as they emerge and proactively addressed new and known risks.

  • Commitment to partnering with clients to facilitate effective engagement and participation.

    Other tasks may be assigned from time to time to meet the needs of the organisation. Specific actions and objectives of this role will be outlined through the goal setting and review process.

    Authority

    The occupant of this position has authority as per the delegation manual.

    Key Selection Criteria

    Qualifications

    • Relevant qualification or active study in the disability sector is desirable.

  • Relevant experience in performing the work tasks required in this role is desirable, including

    an ability to undertake a range of household duties, including meal preparation and

    household cleaning.

  • Relevant experience in working with mental health and behaviours of concern is desirable.

  • Level 2 First Aid Certificate and CPR.

  • Ability to actively support people with a disability in daily living and personal care skills

  • Must be able to work shifts that may involve weekends, morning and evening work, and sleepovers.

• Current Victorian Driver’s Licence.

Privacy and Confidentiality Agreement

The employee acknowledges that in the course of their employment at Strength In Care they may have access or become acquainted with the written materials and other confidential health information, and agrees:

  1. To maintain the confidence of the confidential information and to prevent unauthorised disclosure to or use by any other person, film or company.

  2. To only use confidential information for the purpose of carrying out their duties whether that be during employment or after it has ceased.

  3. Not to remove any part of the confidential information from the premises of the employer without written consent of the employer.

  4. Not for any reason appropriate, copy, memorize or in any manner reproduce or part with any confidential information.

  5. On termination of their employment or else when required to do so by the employer, return any and all of the confidential information including any copy of that information, in whatever form that takes.

  6. When borrowing manuals/information they will return it wholly and in good condition at the time required by the employer.

  1. Working with Participants


When interacting or working with people using our services, staff will:

  • Always treat service users with respect, and be mindful of their rights to privacy and confidentiality

  • Always show respect for people’s cultural or religious sensitivities or requirements, and ensure the responsiveness of the service to their needs and circumstances

  • Uphold the rights of people with disability, including their rights as consumers

  • Facilitate informed decision by participants in a person-centred approach which supports and reflects their preferences and expectations

  • Ensure that service users are provided with, and understand, all information relevant to their situation, options available to them and conditions of use for the service

  • Ensure they have access to independent advocacy or support if they require in making any decisions

  • Be aware of personal boundaries and never enter a sexual relationship with a service user 

  • Treat all people in a manner that demonstrates respect and ensures their environment is safe, taking all reasonable steps to prevent any activities that will impact on the quality and safety of the services provided.

  • Report to supervisor any potential or real risks of harm to the person with a disability.

  • Not accept money or other gifts


  1. Standards in the Workplace


All staff members are required to:

  • Attend work in the times agreed, notify delegate officer of their absences, report and account for all leave taken, record attendance and obtain approval before changing their work times

  • Comply with the requirements of their duty statements and agreed work plans, paying appropriate attention to quality and detail in their work

  • Provide accurate and honest information to delegated officer about work completed and challenges experienced in completing work

  • Follow instructions that are reasonable and lawful and within their capability and training

  • Report any suspected corrupt or fraudulent practices of others. Any staff member making a report will be protected from reprisal

  • Observe the requirements for conditions of employment and safety as described in our Workplace Health and Safety Policy

  • Perform their duties unaffected by alcohol or the use of drugs other than those prescribed for them by a medical practitioner 

  • Maintain a harmonious, co-operative and productive workplace, respectful of diversity

  • Ensure they do not use their position to exert inappropriate influence over others

    1. Confidentiality and Privacy


All staff and management must respect and keep confidential internal matters of the organisation and respect the privacy of others.


4.2  Harassment and Bullying


Harassment and bullying are unacceptable and contrary to ethical behaviour. Additionally, harassment based on a person’s sex, race, ethnic religious background, age, pregnancy, marital status, disability, transgender (transsexual) status or sexuality breaches anti-discrimination and human rights law. 


Harassment in the workplace can take many forms. It can be obvious or subtle, direct or indirect. It includes:

  • Sexual or suggestive remarks or gestures

  • Displaying or circulating sexually suggestive, offensive or degrading/insulting material (e.g. on walls, computer screen savers, email)

  • Making fun of someone, spreading rumours, and unwelcome practical jokes

  • Obscene or unsolicited telephone calls, letters, faxes or email messages

  • Invasion of personal space, unnecessary physical contact  

  • Continually ignoring or dismissing someone’s contribution 

  • Pushing, shoving or jostling or assault

  • Threats, insults, name calling, inappropriate language

  • Creating a hostile feeling or environment, even when there are no direct attacks being made on a person


Complaints concerning harassment or bullying should be actioned according to the Compliments, Complaints/ Feedback Policy.  


4.3 Reporting Unethical Behaviour


If a person believes that the behaviour of any staff member, or management is unethical they must report it to delegated officer.


Unethical behaviour is defined as:

  • Workplace behaviour that is contrary to our codes of ethics or conduct, and other workplace policies

  • Workplace behaviour that violates any law, or is corrupt conduct or misconduct

  • Mismanagement of resources or fraudulent behaviour

  • Behaviour that creates a danger to public health or safety or the environment

Staff members will:

  • Work together towards agreed work objectives and goals and communicate regularly with one another about progress. 

  • Work together to look for ways to improve work methods and to solve workplace and service related problems
